Water is a priceless gift of nature, Water has always played a major role in human society. Without water one cannot imagine the existence of life or civilization. Close relationship between water and man, water resources management has been viewed as a crucial vehicle for socio-economic development. The Department of Jal Shakti Vibhag, Government of Himachal Pradesh has the primary responsibility for development, operation and maintanance of the water-related infrastructure of the state. These include critical functions such as drinking water supply, sewerage system, irrigation system and flood protection works. The department is presently catering to the water supply needs, irrigation needs, providing sewerage system and taking up the flood management works in the State. Presently the department is operating 10067 water supply schemes and 41835 hand pumps, 202664 hectare area has been brought under irrigation schemes and 40 towns have been covered under sewerage schemes. To cater the agriculture-based economy of Himachal Pradesh, the department has developed irrigation infrastructure for 2.06 lac hectare. The department is executing Water Supply Schemes, Irrigation Schemes, Flood Protection Works and Sewerage Schemes. There are 2 Engineer-in-Chief Offices, one EnC is posted in Shimla and 2nd EnC (Project) posted at Mandi is looking after the Flood Management Works and Externally Aided Projects. There are 4 Zonal offices headed by the Chief Engineers, 15 Circle Offices headed by Superintending Engineers, 71(including GWO UNA) Divisional Offices headed by Executive Engineers, 215 Sub Divisions headed by Assistant Engineers, 662 sections headed by the Junior Engineer.
